MEDICAL TEAM

Our medical team includes specialists in the most advanced surgical eye care available — physicians who are board certified in anesthesiology and ophthalmic surgery. Our nursing staff is trained to care for patients through every phase of their visit. And, at every step, our patients’ privacy, comfort and safety is priority. We’ve also created comfortable surroundings for our patients’ family members with an experienced technician assigned to answer questions.

Physician Owners

Robin F. Beran, M.D.
Dr. Beran is Medical Director of the Columbus Laser and Cataract Center.  His special interest is in surgically correcting refractive errors (reducing the need for glasses).  Dr. Beran is one of the first surgeons in the United States certified to use the Verisyse ™ and ICL phakic implants.  These FDA approved devices are permanent implantable artificial lenses that improve vision in patients with severe nearsightedness.  He also offers comprehensive surgical treatment for refractive disorders using LASIK, LASEK, Refractive Cataract Surgery, Refractive Lens Exchange and INTACTS.
Richard G. Orlando, M.D.
Dr. Orlando specializes in small incision and complex cataract surgery.  He participates in numerous research studies and lectures on new surgical instrumentation for intraocular surgery.  In addition, he is an approved surgeon for the Crystalens®, ReZoom™ and ReStor® IOL’s for presbyopia, as well as the Acrysoft® Toric lens for astigmatism management in cataract patients.
Kenneth A. Beckman, M.D.
Dr. Beckman is Director of Corneal Surgery at Columbus Ophthalmology Associates and a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Ohio State University.  He completed a fellowship in corneal and anterior segment surgery at Tulane University.  Dr. Beckman specializes in cataract surgery and corneal transplant including the new sutureless corneal transplant technique, DSEK.  Dr. Beckman is also involved in research for treatment of chronic dry eye and speaks throughout the region on ocular surface disorders.  He is past president of the Columbus Ophthalmology and ENT Society.
Robert J. Derick, M.D.
Dr. Derick is the Director of Glaucoma Services at Columbus Ophthalmology Associates.  He specializes in glaucoma surgery and small incision cataract surgery.  A former glaucoma fellow at Johns Hopkins’ Wilmer Eye Institute, Dr. Derick’s research has involved new laser and surgical management of glaucoma.  In addition to offering standard surgical treatments in glaucoma such as ALT, SLT and microsurgical filtering procedures, Dr. Derick is the first central Ohio surgeon to perform Canaloplasty, a new less invasive glaucoma surgery.

Charles J. Hickey, M.D.
Dr. Hickey is the Medical Director of Columbus Eye Surgery Center.  He trained at the Ohio State University Hospitals and specializes in laser treatment for diabetic eye disease and small incision cataract surgery.  Dr. Hickey is a board member of Mt. Carmel Hospital and past president of the Columbus Medical Association.  He serves in leadership at both the Ohio State Medical Association and the American Medical Association.  He is an assistant clinical professor at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

James A. McHale, M.D.
Dr. McHale specializes in advanced cataract surgery, using new technology lens implants to decrease astigmatism and help patients to see far and near without glasses. In addition, he treats glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy with laser surgery. Dr. McHale is the Chairman for the Ophthalmology Department at Mount Carmel West Hospital. He has privileges at Ohio State University Hospital, Mount Carmel West, Dublin Methodist Hospital and Fayette County Memorial Hospital. He teaches resident physicians from Ohio State, Mount Carmel and Ohio Health Hospitals as well as medical students about ophthalmology and eye surgery.

Sugat Patel, M.D.
Dr. Patel is a retinal specialist with Midwest Retina, Inc.  He trained at Henry Ford Health Systems and Vancouver General Hospital.  At Henry Ford Eye Care services, Dr. Patel researched clinical applications of technology in the diagnosis and management of cystoid macular edema and glaucoma.  He is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Ohio Ophthalmology Association and the Ohio State Medical Association.
